Banker’s Compliance Consulting: How It All Began

While employed by the FDIC, Dave Dickinson developed a Real Estate Matrix to assist bankers with an understanding of the complexities of real estate lending. He had no idea he was beginning to educate bankers with compliance regulations. In early 1992, Dave left the FDIC and worked for a community bank that was affiliated with several other banks. While employed as a loan officer and compliance officer, the holding company chairman asked Dave to share his expertise with several affiliate banks. This birthed Dave’s idea of consulting.

Humble Beginnings

In October 1992, Dave left the bank to start Banker’s Compliance Consulting in a 10’ x 10’ room in the back of a barbershop in Central City, Nebraska. He used a card table as a desk and sat on a folding chair. His mom gave him a 3-drawer filing cabinet for free.  “These were lean years, but I was committed to making BCC work” Dave says.  In the fall of 1994, Banker’s Compliance Consulting hired it’s first administrative assistant.

Growth

Compliance requirements continue to grow in 1994 with RESPA changes, in 2001 with the passing of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the terrorist attacks brought a lot of focus on BSA.  Soon after (October 2003), the USA PATRIOT Act was passed and the need for our expertise continued to expand rapidly.

The mortgage crisis of 2008 tightened up the banking industry and it was certainly felt by Banker’s Compliance Consulting.  The passage of the Dodd-Frank Act in 2010 resulted in many new regulations and requirements and the need to provide more training.

Dave recalls, “in the early days, I conducted the seminars by myself.  This was definitely a flywheel type of action as we might only have 10-15 people at some locations in the beginning.  At first, we would hold seminars in Grand Island and Omaha/Lincoln, Nebraska but then it grew to other cities. Now we train all over the country and can virtually be anywhere with Internet-based training.”

In addition to our own seminars, Dave was asked to speak at the American Bankers Association’s (ABA) Compliance School in October 2001 and has presented at the school at least once every year (but sometimes at 2 or 3 schools per year) ever since.  “The ABA first asked me to present at their annual Regulatory Compliance Conference (RCC) in 2002.  I have presented at every annual ABA RCC since then and Jerod Moyer has presented at several as well.  In October 2013, I also began teaching at the ABA’s Graduate School.”  Numerous state banking associations now rely on the educators at Banker’s Compliance Consulting for their conferences, schools and webinars.

Additionally, Banker’s Compliance Consulting has had a long-standing relationship with several other banking organizations and schools.  These include the Center for Financial Training and the Independent Community Bankers Association. This list continues to grow.  Since 2010, Jerod Moyer has lead the training division of Banker’s Compliance Consulting.

Banker’s Compliance Consulting has taught hundreds of webinars for BankersOnline since 2001.  Dave and Jerod are both “BOL Guru’s”.  In 2015 we began producing our own webinars.
